The human brain and body are amazingly resilient, and you possess innate abilities for increasing that resilience while mitigating the effects of negative stress.

The brain and body both experience and store the effects of stress. You may not even be aware of how stress influences how you feel, think, act, interact with and affect those around you.

Cultivating such understanding and bringing forth your innate resilience abilities improves your longterm health, relationships and your well-being now.

About Stress Management and Resilience Training (SMART)

Your brain is controlled by two different systems, depending on if you are stressed out or not. When you are at your best--positive, creative, productive, self-assured, self-controlled, self-outgoing, problem solving, inventive--your parasympathetic system in engaged and your Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) is in charge.

When the amygdala takes over, however, your sympathetic nervous system is activated, and you are not at your best.
You feel negative. Your attention is narrow--only on the lookout for threat, danger, your mind preoccupied with worries and fears. Inflammation increases pain. You can be more irritable, less fun to be around. You have less access to learning and memories, and to the best parts of being human! Even digestion and fertility can suffer from too much/prolongued stress.

And the longer this goes on, the more wear and tear your healthy systems experience, and the more likely you are to develop non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, mental health issues like anxiety and depression, even cancer.

The SMART program, a series of skill-building classes, helps you manage your stress and build resilience through mind-body principles and self-care practices.

Before the pandemic, some 60 to 90% of all primary care doctor visits were for stress-related conditions. I can only imagine how much this has increased since 2020.

Mind-body strategies are the safest and often the most effective way to reduce the negative impacts of stress, improve resilience, promote health and well-being, and even prevent many illnesses and conditions. If you have any of these, you can benefit from SMART:

PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL &  COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS OF EXCESSIVE STRESS:

• Back & neck pain, headaches
• Cold hands, feet
• Exhaustion / fatigue
• Nail-biting, jaw-clenching
• Gastrointestinal issues
• Worrying
, negativity
•Increased smoking

• Substance abuse
• Relationship conflicts
• Difficulties w/ focus, decisions

• Anger, irritability, frustration
CONDITIONS CAUSED OR WORSENED BY STRESS:

• Hypertension
• Anxiety, Depression
• Autoimmune issues
• Cardiac arrhythmia
• Gastrointestinal conditions
• Hostility/Anger
• Insomnia
 • Inflammation & Pain

You can think and feel better, more positive,
and become healthier.

The SMART

And it begins by changing your stress response to--
